Hi Simeon -- agreed with you that Apple has also been a help, not just a hindrance. The fresh enthusiasm for mobile Flash started pretty quickly after Apple upset the NA mobile market by their iPhone introduction, and prompted some questions during the Adobe analyst call back in December 2008:

 "(Q) How come you're still reporting mobile revenue? Wasn't the Open Screen Project announced awhile ago?
 "(A) As it relates to mobile, you're right -- we did anticipate it starting to drop a little sooner. What happened is a lot of the OEMs burned through some of their prepaids faster than we thought. Flash Lite has done extremely well and they just couldn't wait for the OSP version of Flash to come out later in 2009, so we did some renewals with them earlier and larger than we thought we would do."

It is more important to analyze for what people are using their mobile devices for. Games, social apps, office tools etc. How many people are using them for web browsing? I think AIR is as important as running Flash Player on a mobile device's browser.

Besides if iPhone App support on CS5 comes real, then Apple will have to reshape App Store as every single experienced Flash Developer could put 2-3 apps to App Store per day :)

Apple is holding out for HTML5 - plain and simple. Lack of Flash has not gotten in the way of selling the iPhone; as soon as it does, you'll see them change their strategy. Which will probably be never.

I think the iPad may cause them to reconsider. The iPad is mainly an Internet device, and people are going to hate not having Flash on it. I guess we'll see what happens.

@JNat,
 I'll have to disagree with you. Yes, the only people jumping ship because of Flash right now are the geeks, but give it a year or two. When there are tens of thousands of Flash games and apps available, that's what will draw the masses. The iPhone app store is bound to fall. If you're a developer, would you rather developer an app for 19 out of the top 20 phones or JUST the iPhone alone - not to mention Apple's crazy approval process.

The developers will move away from Apple and the consumers will follow.

Uh...other commenters...the author is being sarcastic/facetious. What he's really saying, with tongue in cheek, is that Apple/Jobs are stupid because their strategy of killing Flash has backfired.

I have to disagree though. Only geeky types will avoid iPhones because they don't run Flash. The other 99% of the world could give a crap about whether Flash works on their iPhone or not, and Jobs knows this. Demand for the iPhone will increase even more if/when they can get it on other carriers such as Verizon.

Hey Simeon, I also ported Lee's tutorial to Actionscript for use in Flex. I was able to get the gestures to work using an iPhone. Check it out if you want.

The only reason Apple did it is cause Flash in the browser could ruin the appstore business plan. With no Flash, Apple has its own Internet, which is the Appstore. They dont want to power the browser.

I still didnt get what would Apple win empowering the Flash platform, according to your theory.

They don't have it because flash is a poor utility for web navigation. Web sites that use flash as their splash page and navigation or more often than not are difficult to navigate (to many clicks), take a long time to load and are resource hogs. I have no idea why anyone would want flash on a phone. Sure it's fine for Farmville, but it will never be able to perform as good as native apps for the phone. I don't get how Flash = 'the real web'. I say good riddance.
