Flex 4 and Flash Builder Released

Adobe made the official announcement this morning that Flex 4 is code complete and Flash Builder 4 is up for sale. Flex 4 has been extensively overhauled to streamline developer-designer work-flow. In addition to work-flow an amazing amount of time has been put into making it easier to customize the look and feel of your Flex applications through skinning.

Beyond the additions to the actual SDK to make our lives easier, Flex Builder has been updated and re-branded Flash Builder. The re-branding is essential in understanding the scope of what that product does, and helping Flex developers is just one small part of that.

Adobe has created a comparison chart that includes features of Flex Builder 3, Flash Builder Standard, Flash Builder Premium, and the Flex 4 SDK. It does a great job of showing what features are included in what product and also which existing features have been updated or enhanced.

Check out the comparison chart here.

  1. Thanks for the link, the comparison is helpful. However, I don’t agree with the upgrade policy. Whether you have Flex 3 Standard or Flex 3 Professional you pay $299 to upgrade to Flash Builder 4 Premium, even though Flex 3 Professional was far more expensive. That sucks!

  2. What is worse… is i bought flex builder 3 professional and know i see the charting components in the standard flex 4 version.. I can’t upgrade to the flex 4 standard version from the flex 3 professional version. Talk about bunk.. they can forget it.

I could see if they were equal mostly, but when they moved the charts to the standard version they really changed the game and should allow paying for the flex 3 expensive version to downgrade..

It’s like after buying a Porsche and bringing it into the dealer and then saying.. no trade in’s for a chevy unless your getting a Porsche or better.
