Trying to find the right medium

I have been having a hard time getting things written down on this blog lately. Its not that I don’t have anything to say, hell get within 10 feet of me and you can’t get me to shut up. The problem is I am not feeling that writing out my thoughts and feelings are really expressing myself well (I am not a great writer). I keep thinking I need to do more screen captures and that way I can just talk it out, but it seems every time I do this I end up in an endless loop of editing and recapturing (nothing in the world bothers me like the sound of my recorded voice).

I almost feel like I need to just fire up a connect room, twitter a topic and ramble to anyone who wants to listen. And while i can record that I can’t very well get it posted back here for viewing which is something I kinda like. I almost wish I could expose my connect recordings via Adobe TV because at least those I can embed here. I have never tried doing screen capture while recording a connect presentation, but I can’t think that would go well.

So where does that leave me? I have lots of things about Gumbo, Flex, Open Source, Java and a couple other things I have been working that are just itching to be shared. But I just can’t seem to get the motivation to get them written.

How do you get motivated and what outlets do you make use of to get your ideas out to share with the world?

I’ve been having the same struggle. Whether it’s reality or not, my perception (or expectation) is that writing a blog post requires me to truly complete a thought. Complete it, consider it, comprehensively address it, perfect it, proofread it and generally put a lot more effort into it than I often feel like doing.

I guess it’s just laziness, but it’s what makes Twitter so attractive to me. A stream of consciousness thought there has no expectations around it. A blog post, though, has some expectation of thoroughness and even _some_ level of subject matter authority. More often than not, I’d rather just air a quick thought and see what kind of dialog ensues.

@Rob I hear you man. I twitter 5-10 times a day on technical and non-technical items. It has become a much easier way to express myself. Which just ups the pressure to do good things on my blog. I think I am just gonna have to try doing my hand at youtube style video casting. Go with the unedited just share with the world dump of daily thoughts.

I’ve been doing the connect thing and calling it the “Flextras Friday Lunch.” It is a weekly presentation / Q&A session I’ve been doing live using Connect. I give a five minute preso on whatever is on my mind–often in promotion for Flextras–and then open up the floor for questions.

Questions are sometimes related to the preso, but often spread to other areas. They’ve been surprisingly a lot of fun. I plan to start ripping the audio out of them and turn them into a Flextras podcast. ( Slowly, but surely).

The other avenue that saps my creative energy is The Flex Show.
