With all the open source tools around remoting for the Flash Platform, I never really understood what business WebOrb was after. Shortly after the release of Flex DS they started working on their own Data Synchronization tools, but I still just thought of that in terms of remote data for the Flash Platform.
I know see the real light of what they are doing. WebOrb is not competing with the free and OSS tools in the market, they are providing an alternative to LiveCycle ES. Including now remoting and data synchronization from the DS suite, and now including PDF functionality from the ES suite. Maybe this was public knowledge but it just dawned on me and I thought I would share.

Thanks so much for this post. I thought I’d add to it to clear some things up. As such, we are fully committed to developing products and services that enable the development and runtime of the most creative and useful RIAs. WebORB is our flagship product and it is both a development tool used to reduce development time and cost and also a runtime platform, because it provides the integration layer, including support for streaming media.
As an enabler, we’re expanding our offering to support the full end-to-end development and runtime of RIAs to include developer SDKs, RIA testing and runtime analytics and we do this for not just Java, but also .NET, PHP, Ruby and eventually Cold Fusion.
As a response to your comment about us competing with OSS, we only compete to the extent that we want to be the go to source for everything RIA. Our offering for OSS is our closed but free WebORB Community Edition. Then for those who need commercial support, we make it very easy and fairly inexpensive to upgrade to Enterprise Edition.

Thanks for your response here. I have used Weborb for ruby and have a pretty good run down on what it is you guys have done. This post is really about me having missed the mission or intention of the company.
But competition is always a good thing. It keeps everybody on their toes. Corporations and Open Source folks alike. :)
