First thoughts on Las Vegas
Ok, so this is my first time here in Las Vegas. And although this hotel is amazing, getting here was a bit more effort than I expected.
My plan ride was short and amazingly quiet (more on that later), and we arrived after what seemed no time at all. No time at all that is compared to how long I had to wait at baggage claim for my backpack. The plane ride from pdx to las took 1 hour and 59 minutes. It took the baggage workers 1 hour and 19 minutes to get me my backpack! Yes ladies and gentleman, it only took half an hour longer to fly here than it did to get my bags.
After that I proceeded to try to get a cab. This also was much more of an adventure than I expected. After exiting the baggage area I was directed into a line that had a sign labeled “Cabs”. After walking 150 feet or so in this line the area opened up and I was then ushered into a staging area that could not possibly have been shorter than the line to get on Magic Mountain at Disneyland. Actually this line moved pretty quickly. This, i am sure, was a direct result of the seemingly unending supply of cabs. They have 20 slots for cabs to park. The all pull in and load up, then pull out. No sooner have they pulled out but the 20 slots are filled up again. It was pretty amazing.
My cabbie was fun and I had a good ride over. The line to check in here at the Venetian was not bad and I quickly found myself in my room.
All and all the trip here was very nice. I wouldn’t really have a bad thing to say if I had not had to check my backpack. This stupid ban on more than 3oz liquid has got to stop. I dare say its ridiculous.

hi Simeon,
You could say it’s ridiculous, but you might just get arrested and detained after a warrentless wiretap picked up your comments. Best not to annoy the TSA!!!
The Venetian is a sweet hotel. Wish I could have made MAX. Have a great time!
How far/long is the trip to the hotel from the airport?
Hey Ray,
Once i got in a cab it couldnt have taken more thant 5-10 minutes. I felt like it was just around the corner.
See you when you get here.
What are the rooms like? Net access?
Rooms are pretty amazing. I giant bathroom with tub and shower that are separate. Bedroom and sunken living room with couch, chairs and a desk with a printer. i am very comfy here.
Wired in room acces for ~$10 per 24 hours. But the Max propaganda says there will be free wifi throughout the conference 7am - 7pm. So finding a way to blog shouldnt be too hard
Here Ray,
For you (and my wife) here are some pictures of the room

There’s no doubt that McCarran’s baggage claim system is among the worst in the US. On average I pull 100k miles a year, and McCarran is always the worst. For whatever reason, I find Orlando to come in second place - maybe it has to do with high-volume tourist destinations? Anyways, I eventually asked the baggage claim desk about my bag … "Oh, sir, you can expect 45 minutes on a good day." What? Oh man… At least it wasn’t over 100 in the taxi cab line… Thank goodness for Flash Lite games!
Last time I was in Las Vegas I just slipped a fiver to one of the trolley boys and they got me a cab. Just ask them, dont be a lemming and queue!

Mark,
Graft? Bribery? The illicit, underhand transfer of filthy lucre? I am so disappointed in you :->
See thats what i get for being such an innocent fellow. I think i would be offended if someone tried to bribe me. Cant say what the heck they would try that for, but still.
So I just never think that way. Darn my silly ignorance
Simeon,
Learn from Mark. Maybe you could have "silver" and "platinum" levels of tech support for only a few extra dollars from peoples paycheck every month? Perhpas you could offer additional "protection" for certain machines in case "something nasty happened to them one night" (holding baseball bat with a nasty gleam in your eye). There are so many possibilities :->
Easy gentlemen… It was actually my naive british attitude after a 15 hour (or more) flight… I just said "Dammit old chap, is there a quicker way to get a fine fellow such as myself a cab, I am rather tired you know?" and this fine young chap whistled and got me a cab… I thought I would … how do you "Americans" say it? "Tip" him.. strange notion I know.
